Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Child begging is a pervasive social issue in various parts of Nigeria, including Funtua Local Government Area in Katsina State. It is often associated with the socio-economic challenges facing rural families, where children are sent to the streets to beg as a means of survival (Jibrin & Ibraheem, 2024). The practice of child begging not only exposes children to physical harm and exploitation but also deprives them of their right to education, health, and overall well-being. Efforts to eradicate child begging have been made by government bodies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and community groups, but the practice persists due to a lack of effective communication strategies targeting the root causes. Development communication, including awareness campaigns, advocacy programs, and community outreach, is essential in addressing this issue by educating the public, engaging families, and promoting alternatives to begging (Ali & Hassan, 2023). This study will assess the effectiveness of communication strategies used to combat child begging in Funtua Local Government Area and explore how these strategies can be improved to support the eradication of the practice.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Child begging in Funtua remains a significant challenge despite various interventions by government and NGOs. Existing communication strategies have not been sufficiently evaluated in terms of their impact on eradicating the practice. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of communication strategies such as public awareness campaigns, media interventions, and community programs in addressing the issue of child begging. It will also investigate the barriers that hinder the successful implementation of these communication efforts and propose recommendations for improving them.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies in raising awareness about child begging in Funtua Local Government Area.

  2. To assess the impact of public awareness campaigns, media interventions, and community outreach programs in eradicating child begging.

  3. To identify challenges faced in implementing communication strategies and propose solutions to improve their effectiveness.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How effective have communication strategies been in raising awareness about child begging in Funtua Local Government Area?

  2. What role have public awareness campaigns, media interventions, and community outreach programs played in eradicating child begging?

  3. What challenges are faced in implementing communication strategies to combat child begging, and how can they be addressed?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Communication strategies significantly contribute to raising awareness about child begging in Funtua Local Government Area.

  2. Public awareness campaigns and media interventions are effective in reducing child begging in Funtua.

  3. Lack of funding and insufficient community involvement hinder the effectiveness of communication strategies in eradicating child begging.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the role of communication strategies in addressing child begging. The findings will help inform policy development and guide future communication efforts aimed at eradicating the practice. It will also provide a basis for NGOs, government agencies, and community leaders to improve their approaches to tackling child begging.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Funtua Local Government Area in Katsina State and will examine communication strategies implemented by local authorities, NGOs, and media organizations to address child begging. Limitations include challenges in obtaining accurate data on the extent of child begging and potential biases in participant responses.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
